After calculating the OEL and categorising the substance, the Occupational Exposure Band (OEB) must be obtained that will define the technical and organisational measures to be taken into account.
Control banding is defined by the NIOSH as a process in which a single technological control measure (such as general ventilation or containment) is applied to a range or band of exposures to a substance, involving a certain hazard group (such as skin or eye irritants or irritants and corrosive agents). The purpose of the banding control is to control the exposure measures.
The following figure indicates the containment classification comparing the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) and the Occupational Exposure Band (OEB).
After identifying the OEB, the strategy must be determined that is to be followed, as shown in the following diagram:
Another of the essential points when selecting a containment strategy is to choose the containment equipment to be used, which is summarised in the following table:
Where necessary, the exposure control should be complemented by wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
These measures must be regularly reviewed to ensure adequate protection over time.
